Our Advocacy Work

CFUW Saanich Peninsula advocates on issues of education, health, human rights and social well-being for women and girls in particular and society as a whole. 

We respond to emerging issues in British Columbia, as well as nationally, and continue to pursue solutions to long standing problems.

June 6, 2024

One-day event at Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney to provide a forum for seniors and their care-giver families on the Saanich Peninsula to gather information on aging, particularly of interest to those who wish to age “in place” in their own home or are considering transitioning to independent or assisted living.

Our Club’s 30-Year Anniverary Celebration

Club members knitted and donated:

• – 30 baby blankets to Beacon Community Services to support young mothers in our community.                  

• – 18 shawls and lap blankets to the Legion Manor in Saanichton.

• – 30 toques each winter to The Soup Kitchen in Victoria.

The 30^th Anniversary team handed out bags to collect non-perishable food for the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank, donating 300 pounds.

Members donated 30 old phones to the CNIB’s program Phone It Forward. This program empowers people who are blind.

2025 International Women’s Day Tea

CFUW’s world famous poet, Lorna Crozier gave a presentation on ‘Aging out Loud’. Salted with poetry, it was a manifesto for passion, wonder, and a love affair with the planet. Proceeds of $2,500 went to our Education Trust Fund.

$4,000 Provided mentorship and assistance for the development of the Individual Learning Centre’s successful application for the national CFUW Library Award for the Hummingbird Project.

$3,000 Teen Education and Motherhood (T.E.A.M). The centre, in partnership with School District 63, provides licensed care for infants and toddlers, serving 12 children under the age of three. Preschool/group care for up to 18 three to five year olds for young parents completing their education. The program includes snacks and lunch. Space not filled by students are available to parents in the community.                     

$1,200 for the Community Kitchen Food Skills and After Food Skills Programs

Cooking Program 1 set of pots and pans from Thrifty Foods promotional giveaway was donated to the ILC.

$5,000 to a Professional Development Fund in support of upgrading the skill set of Licensed Practical Nurses to address the current lack of expertise in several health care specialities.       

2019 Partnering with our four municipalities and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation in holding a public forum on access to health care on the Peninsula.            

Fall 2021 to Spring 2022

Members collected stamps at Thrifty’s Foods to earn sets of Villeroy and Boch pots and pans. 4,200 stamps were collected, and an additional donation by the Club of $650, to purchased 7 sets.   One set was given to the community kitchen at the Individual Learning Centre and six sets were given to refugee families.

Research on seniors home care services, in conjunction with BC Seniors’ Advocate, and drafting of resolution for provincial and national policy development.
